Chapter 6

VIRGINIA glanced up at her window as she walked to the hotel and saw the curtains tied together with a red handkerchief. That was her signal to Abiel that she needed to speak to him. She hadn’t tied them. What did that mean?

She paused and contemplated before going into the hotel, thankful that Cyllia was at the dressmaker picking up a gown she’d had repaired. As she walked into the hotel, she nodded greetings to the desk clerk and the elevator operator. The ride up to her floor felt like it took forever, and she couldn’t help but feel a cold sweat of anticipation.

She approached her door with caution. After the slightest hesitation, she unlocked the door and stepped into the outer room. Nothing appeared out of place. Carefully setting her purse down onto a little side table, she reached into the hidden compartment and pulled out her double barreled .22 caliber Derringer. The tiny weapon fit perfectly in the palm of her feminine hand. As she walked toward the bedroom doorway, she held it at ready, finger on the trigger.

Before she could open the door, it opened and Abiel walked out, followed by another man with dark hair and dark brown eyes. Virginia gasped and put a hand to her chest. “I almost shot you.”

Abiel raised an eyebrow. “I think not.” He gestured behind him. “This is Matthew.”

Virginia held out her hand and shook his. “Hope.” She looked at Abiel. “You’re lucky I didn’t have my maid with me.”

“Your maid is currently flirting with a very attractive French boy over a chocolate pastry.” Matthew spoke French flawlessly. He moved through the room and sat on the couch. “We have a few minutes.”

Virginia pursed her lips. “What do you need?”

Abiel walked over to the window and removed the red handkerchief before responding. “Did you secure a dressing room inside the prison?”

“Yes. Muller got me a supply closet with a connecting bathroom on the first floor.” She lowered herself into the wing backed chair and gracefully waved a hand toward him. “I am at your disposal.”

His grin transformed his face, softening hard lines, giving him an almost boyish quality. “If only, Mademoiselle.” After he winked and she smiled in return, he sobered up again, his face showing the wear of the war on his heart. “Tomorrow I am going to hide in a steamer trunk that you’ll have carried into your room.”

“I don’t think I have –”

Matthew interrupted. “We’ll use my trunk. It has a false bottom for my explosives.”

Virginia gasped and stared at Abiel. “You’re going to ride in the same trunk as your explosives?”

Matthew smiled and she suddenly saw Grace’s face. Her eyes widened as she recognized him as one of Grace’s brothers. “If something happens and those bombs go off, it won’t matter if he’s in the same trunk or the next room.” He looked at his watch. “What time are you scheduled to arrive at the prison?”

“The show is at twenty-one hundred. I usually arrive two hours before to dress and prepare.
